How SPES Empowered Kaye Ann and Her Family to Dream Bigger

I was raised in the modest coastal town of Baybay, Catarman, Northern Samar, where life was simple but never easy. Although I am now 23 years old, I can still vividly remember how every day was a balancing act for my family. We lived with very little—carefully budgeting for food, school expenses, and other daily needs. Money was rarely available, but hope was something we never let go of.

In 2019, during my Grade 11 year, an opportunity came knocking at my door. My mother, who was then employed at the municipal office, informed me about the Special Program for the Employment of Students (SPES)—a government program that allows students to work and earn during school breaks. At first, I hesitated. I lacked confidence in my communication skills, and the thought of interacting with people outside my comfort zone made me anxious. However, financial hardship pushed me to be brave. Helping my family was my top priority, so I gathered my courage, submitted my SPES application, and took my first big step into a new chapter of my life.

SPES not only helped address our financial needs but also allowed me to discover who I truly was. I gained practical office skills such as computer use, record-keeping, and client assistance. More importantly, I developed essential personal skills—expressing myself clearly, interacting confidently with others, and trusting my own abilities. The program taught me not just how to work, but how to grow.

One of my most cherished memories during that time was buying Jollibee treats for my family. For others, it might have seemed ordinary, but for us—who once struggled to afford even small comforts—it was the fulfillment of a dream. Seeing my parents and siblings smile and enjoy a simple meal together showed me how a single opportunity can create meaningful change.

My journey continued to grow after that. As a SPES beneficiary, I was fortunate to work in various government offices, including DSWD, DILG, PESO, and LCR. Each assignment taught me valuable lessons in discipline, teamwork, compassion, and humility—qualities I carried with me into every new role.

Later on, I applied to the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) and was assigned to the Tingog Project, which required traveling to different areas. At first, I was worried about my health and whether I had the skills needed for the job. Still, with determination and gratitude, I chose to face every challenge head-on.

Today, I am proud to be part of the Department of Health (DOH), applying all the lessons, values, and confidence I gained through my SPES journey. SPES was never just about earning money—it was a life-changing experience that gave me independence, responsibility, and belief in myself.

I was once a shy student, but now I am a confident young professional. My story is proof that when opportunities are embraced with perseverance, lives can truly change. Through SPES, I not only built a brighter future for myself but also gave my family hope, joy, and pride—something I will always be grateful for.
